On April 21, 2020, the NIH Electronic Research Administration (eRA) has successfully migrated its production environment with over 100 systems to Amazon Web Services (AWS). eRA is the first National Institutes of Health (NIH) enterprise system receiving Authority to Operate (ATO) in a cloud environment and achieving the successful transition to AWS. This significant cloud migration enabled eRA to improve systems performance, streamline operational efficiencies, eliminate capital expenditures, and increase program flexibility through the use of new platforms and services. It was the culmination of over two years of careful planning and preparation, which included cloud provider selection, security design, network architecture, cost management, extensive testing, and systems migration. The eRA Cloud migration, a direct result of a long-term partnership between Highrise and eRA, was a success because of technical leadership, execution and expertise provided by Highrise Consulting Inc. staff, and it affirms the company’s knowledge and experience managing large-scale cloud migration initiatives.
